Winter Weather Alert

All News

Our crews are geared up and closely monitoring the incoming weather conditions from Winter Storm Fern. This strong cold front is forecast to bring extreme cold temperatures that may impact San Patricio Electric Cooperative members.

We strongly encourage you to begin preparations now, as sustained freezing conditions are forecast throughout the weekend. Please continue to monitor local conditions, follow guidance from local authorities and look out for one another during this cold-weather event.

Please stay safe and remember the 4 P’s: People, Pets, Pipes and Plants — key steps to staying prepared during severe cold weather.

Weather Overview:

  • Severe cold is expected. Freezing rain, sleet and ice are possible, especially in the northern part of our service area.

  • Freezing rain could lead to icy roads and potential power outages.

  • ERCOT has issued a Weather Watch, but expects grid conditions to remain normal. Weather-related local outages may still be possible.

Cold Weather Power Outage Tips:

  • Stay safe around power lines. Always assume down power lines are energized and dangerous. Report any downed power lines to SPEC or 911.

  • Charge up ahead of time. Fully charge cell phones, battery packs and essential medical devices before the cold arrives.

  • Use heating sources safely. Never use ovens, grills or outdoor heaters indoors. If using a fireplace or battery-operated space heater, ensure proper ventilation and keep flammable items away.

  • Have emergency supplies ready. Keep flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, non-perishable food and water easily accessible. Avoid using candles if possible.

  • Keep warm and conserve heat. Close off unused rooms, block drafts and wear layers to stay warm.

Generator Safety

If you plan to use a generator during a power outage, safety is critical. Improper generator use can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, fire hazards or serious injury. Follow these important safety tips to protect your household and our linemen.

  • Operate generators outdoors only. Never run a generator inside your home, garage, or near windows, doors or vents due to carbon monoxide risk.

  • Never connect directly to your home's wiring. Unless you have a properly installed transfer switch, plugging your generator directly into your home's wiring can cause backfeeding which is dangerous to you and our linemen that might be working to restore your electricity.

  • Use heavy-duty extension cords. Ensure cords are rated for outdoor use and are free of cuts or damage.

  • Keep generators dry. Place generators on a flat, dry surface and protect them from rain while maintaining proper ventilation.

  • Fuel safely. Turn the generator off and let it cool before refueling. Store fuel in approved containers away from living areas.

Our crews are ready and will continue working, as conditions allow, to serve you safely. Stay safe. Stay warm. And take the necessary precautions. We will continue to provide updates as needed.
